Short Summary
Birth-Rate Crisis examines the worldwide decline in
fertility through the lenses of biology, neuroscience, psychology, and history,
arguing that the root causes lie deeper than economics or public policy alone.
Drawing on decades of research and historical evidence, Jim Penman and Andrea
Pearson explore the relationship between dopamine, character, family formation,
and demographic change while offering a hopeful framework for strengthening
families, communities, and society.
Description
What if the greatest demographic crisis in human history has
been misunderstood?
Birth rates are collapsing across the globe. Governments
have spent billions trying to reverse the trend, yet fertility continues to
fall. Economists blame housing costs. Sociologists point to changing cultural
values. Politicians argue over policy. But what if they're all focusing on the
symptoms rather than the cause?
In Birth-Rate Crisis: Reclaiming Family and Purpose in a
Dopamine-Driven World, Australian entrepreneur Jim Penman and USA Today
bestselling author Andrea Pearson present a groundbreaking explanation that
challenges nearly everything we've been told about why people are having fewer
children.
Drawing on biology, neuroscience, psychology, history, and
decades of research, they reveal a surprising connection between modern life,
dopamine, character, and the worldwide decline in family formation. From
ancient Rome to today's most prosperous nations, the same patterns emerge again
and again—offering new insight into one of humanity's greatest challenges.
Inside, you'll discover:
·
Why financial incentives have consistently
failed to raise birth rates.
·
The hidden biological forces influencing
marriage, parenthood, and long-term commitment.
·
What history reveals about the rise and fall of
civilizations facing demographic collapse.
·
Why some communities continue to thrive while
others struggle to replace themselves.
·
A hopeful path toward rebuilding stronger
families, healthier communities, and a more meaningful future.
Whether you're concerned about the future of your family,
your nation, or civilization itself, Birth-Rate Crisis offers a compelling new
framework—and a reason for hope.

Early Praise
“Birth-Rate Crisis
provides a unique take on global issues through an integration of history and
neuroscience. More importantly, it offers novel and compelling solutions to the
challenges of living in our modern, dopamine-driven world.” – Heather
Kelley, PhD, author of over 60 peer-reviewed articles
“This book isn't just
about birth rates. It's a fascinating journey through history that explores how
countless aspects of society have influenced the decisions families make. As we
work to create a better future for our world, Birth-Rate Crisis reminds us that
the future also depends on the strength and well-being of the families who will
shape it.” – Jaclyn Hardy, MFA, mother of six, author of Roping His Heart
“Birth-Rate Crisis is
an eye-opening book that not only explores the challenges humanity faces
because of declining birth rates around the world but also offers unique,

Author Bios
Jim Penman Long Bio
The founder and owner of Jim’s Group, Jim Penman is one of
Australia’s best-known entrepreneurs. He has written several books and is a
popular speaker on topics including business, health, happiness, and political
issues such as Australian zoning laws.
While studying for a PhD in history at La Trobe University
in Melbourne, Jim developed ideas that challenged existing thinking on the
reasons for social and political change. In particular, he came to believe that
biology and neuroscience were key underlying factors.
On completing his doctorate, he turned his part-time
lawn-mowing business into what became the largest franchise chain in the
Southern Hemisphere, with 5,700 franchisees in Australia, New Zealand, and
Canada.
He continued his academic interests, and in recent years has
funded an ongoing research program, with 12 papers published in high-ranking
academic journals including Physiology and Behavior, and Behavioural Brain
Research. The program is based at La Trobe University, with labs now operating
in Nanjing and Chongqing, China, and collaborators in the U.S. and elsewhere.
A particular interest is the epigenetic effects of the
environment, especially of mild food restriction and parental care, and also of
the physiology and behavior of cycling animals such as lemmings and muskrats.
He also continues to be active in the business, providing
his direct contact details to every franchisee in the system and fielding
multiple inquiries a day, as well as taking an active role with regard to
customer service issues.
Jim is an evangelical Christian and active in his local
church, living simply on a fraction of his income. Above all, he sees his key
job as a husband and father of ten wonderful children. He believes true success
isn’t measured in bank accounts or business holdings, but in the people you
love and the legacy left behind; and that no material gains, however great, can
compensate for failure in the home.
