Advertisements In Books

Advertisements:

If you plan on being published in the next few years you should know that some e-book companies and publishers are preparing to add advertisements into eBooks. Imagine reading a book and an ad for soda pop comes up on the screen. These ads have both plusses and minuets.

On the plus side, these ads make your book available at a lower cost since merchandisers are purchasing the advertizing space in your book. You may even find a company to sponsor the book in exchange for advertizing space. They advertizing in your book in exchange you can provide your book to readers at a low cost or no cost and still get paid as an author. The more readers you get the more of a following you get, which is especially valuable if you are a career author.

If you so decide to do this be careful about what kind of ads appear in your book. For example if you have a Christian Romance book you don’t want your reader to “turn the page” and see an ad for pornography.

Of course most advertisers are smarter than that and usually try and promote to their target market audience. In the case of a Christian romance you may get advertisements for a Christian dating service.

  1. I hadn;t considered this but i think you're right, it's kind of inevitable *shudder*

  2. I could live with things like having, say, a page of an ad between chapters or something like that. Even as a reader, that wouldn't bother me much. Comic books have done it for decades.

  3. Yes, sadly I think this is an inevitable progression. I've bought some books that had an advert for chocolate right at the back, but if my reading was interrupted by adverts between chapters I'd give up. I don't have an e-book reader, and adverts would put me off getting one even more. Is nothing sacred anymore?

  4. I don't like the idea of ads in e- books at all. I find books my escape and seeing an ad will ruin that for me and I think for alot of people.
    Good post. Blessings, Joanne

  7. I can see the pros and cons of this. I think as long as it did not break the flow of the book I would be fine with it (both as a writer and a reader). Of course, if I had my choice there would be no ads.

Still, it is the world we live in now. People don't seem to watch commercials anymore so companies have to get their advertising in some how.

  8. I wouldn't mind it so much at the end of the book, or even at the beginning. But if I'm reading a page where the character is eating chocolate and an advert for chocolate pops up, oh boy...
